Biography

Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam was born on 15 October 1931. His birth anniversary is observed as World Students' Day. He was the President of India from 2002 to 2007. He was honoured with several prestigious awards including India's highest civilian honour "Bharat Ratna" in 1997. He was born in Dhanushkodi, Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, and studied physics and aerospace engineering.

In 1997, he received the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award in India. He is a recipient of several other awards including Padma Bhushan (1981) and the Padma Vibhushan (1990). In 2002, Dr Kalam became the 11th President of India.

5 Scientific Contributions By Dr. Kalam That Gave Wings To India’s Technological Ambition

1. He was the Project Director in ISRO to help develop India's first indigenous Satellite Launch Vehicle.

2. He also became the Project Director for two missile projects whose aim was to develop ballistic missiles from the technology of the successful SLV programme.

3. He took up the responsibility of developing Indigenous Guided Missiles at DRDO.

4. He was the brain behind multiple nuclear tests carried out at Pokhran in 1998 which made India a nuclear weapon state.

5. He helped design a cost-effective coronary stent known as 'Kalam-Raju-Stent' making healthcare accessible to all.
